Erica Wiebe is the reigning Olympic Champion in the sport of Freestyle Wrestling. She is a 2x Commonwealth Games Champion, a University World Champion, World Medalist, and 10x National Champion – and with all those accomplishments under her belt she stands firm on the notion that one moment doesn’t define us – even a gold medal moment.
I met Erica fresh off her 2016 win in RIO on the set of two different magazine cover shoots.
Since I saw her last, Erica has spoken to over 15,000 youth across Canada, was the Team Captain of the Mumbai Maharathi in the Indian Pro Wrestling League, visited the Canadian Armed Forces deployments in Ukraine and Kuwait, and even participated in a ‘tryout’ with the WWE – needless to say, she’s been a little busy!
I’m excited to share this week’s episode on Naturally Curious with you as Erica and I discuss being excited about the unknown, living in the moment, what it’s like to win a gold medal and why moments like that don’t define you. We also discuss how finding support and taking time helped her reignite her purpose and more. Don’t miss my favourite part – an amazing metaphor about lobsters!
Erica is a straight shooter and all around good, salt of the Earth kind of person. When she’s not taking people down on the mat, she is lifting them up in real life. She is a passionate advocate for the power of sport and volunteers her time as a coach and ambassador with organizations like the Right to Play, Fast & Female, Kidsport Alberta, and is on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary and Calgary Amateur Wrestling Association.
Always up for a new challenge, Erica is soon starting the EMBA Americas program at Queens University and Cornell University – all while she trains to represent Canada at the 2020 (… now 2021) Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Erica is an incredible example of someone who works hard to shine her light with everyone out there. I hope you’ve found some inspiration in this episode and if there is someone you know who might like to hear it, send it their way. Check out her Insta here!
